Having a Goal

Keep moving forward only works if you're moving toward something.

“I just want to do my sumo and keep moving forward,” is what every sumo rikishi says in the interview room, from the lowliest Juryo wrestler all the way to Yokozuna. It means that they want to use their unique talents and abilities to win, and winning starts with moving forward no matter what.

I was talking with a friend last night and we talked about before you can have a plan, you have to have a goal. Which is easy for someone floating on like a modest mouse to say.

Even so, because of current circumstances, right now my goal is, to use a phrase I learned from another old friend, “Breathe in, breathe out, don't die.”

But since when I got taught the trade, we were what used to be called programmer/analysts, my eventual goal is I want to be a friendly, neighborhood database-person. Every organization needs to turn their data into information. You'd think they'd be willing to pay for it, but alas.

Our dearly departed co-founder and I had a thread on how to choose the least worst place to live that stretched over many years. This map showing how long it takes to walk, bike, or transit to amenties from a given location would have been something he would have really liked.
